When he denied the ability to hear her, the girl quickly calmed down. Many would mistake her for being overly emotional or even bipolar, but it's her reactions and actions that speak for her. So they tend to change rapidly, so that her happiness or in this case, disappointment can be evident. Maybe if she had been able to truly communicate to him, he'd quite looking at her like she was a but of a nut case. Well that might be stretching it, but not by much.
