The Mutant
Codename: Echo
Mutant Abilities:
Photographic reflexes allow her to perfectly copy other people's movements. So far she has collected her piano, ballet and training skills just from watching other people and a lot of television. Maya is able to read, write, and speak foreign languages after seeing them written or spoken one time. As a result, she is fluent in multiple languages. Although she is deaf, she can understand people by reading their lips and learned to speak by watching their tongues.
Weaknesses:
Her deafness made her rely on visual cues. This makes it impossible for her to do anything in the dark and communicate with people wearing masks or who don't speak directly towards her. Phone conversations are out of the question. However she can read lips very well and from a distance.
History:
Maya Lopez was born deaf. Her parents treated her as if she was a normal child, however they signed to speak to her. As Maya grew older, she figured how to read lips and how to speak. Because of her disability, Maya didn't have many friends. It wasn't as if she was ugly or stupid, the other children just didn't know how to communicate with her. Her childhood was very basic, but her world was turned upside down when she discovered her father's darker dealings.
Willie Lincoln, known as "Crazy Horse" to his companions- the ones from his drug cartel. Maya's father was a Cheyenne gangster than dealt with some of the most prominent drug lords of the US. Unfortunately he had a bad deal come about and was accidentally murdered in the crossfire. Maya's mother was devastated to learn of her husband's death, she spiraled down an emotional catastrophe. Maya knew that her mother wouldn't get better, she knew that she couldn't help her. What could a 6 year old child do? Lost and without the support of her parents, buried herself in her school work and watched more than enough tv than a young girl should.
Maya's first experience with her mutant abilities occurred when she was 13 years old. She had taken a different route home from school and went by a piano store. It was one of those elaborate shops with twelve grand pianos and a chandelier. There just happened to be an amazing pianist playing one of the black pianos and Maya stared, mesmerized at his movements. Then the girl had the urge to go in and play one of the instruments herself. Without any hesitation, Maya hit every note just as the man previously did. It was a strange feeling, but it felt natural to her. As if she studied for years, her muscles just retained what they saw. Maya finally concluded that she was a mutant.
It wasn't long before Maya applied this concept to other handy skills. She'd learned to ballet dance and box just from watching a few channels on TV. Youtube also helped her add to her defense skills. Her mother, on the rare occasion of her being sober, noticed that her daughter wasn't mentally retarded, but gifted. In Maya's best interests, her mother sent her off to a prep school for the musically talented. Maya excelled in her art just by being around talented artists and being able to watch them, study them.
Once she was in one of the best performing art school in New York, Maya quickly became one of the better dancers and preformers. She wasn't branded as the deaf one, she was a gifted student. Emma Frost also knew that she was a gifted young girl. The blonde headmistress offered Maya a place to stay, an education and a new life. At first Maya didn't know what she was speaking about. Afterall she was already in an institution for gifted kids, there wasn't any possible way that this woman knew what she was. But she did. Frost knew that she was mutant with a unique ability and wanted to help her harness her power and teach her how to use it properly. Maya had no recollection of meeting another mutant and was just thrilled that she wasn't the only one out there.
At first Maya was concerned with the other students there, she was afraid her deafness would hinder her training and social life. But as it turned out, not many people knew that she was deaf. She could read lips prefectly and that masked her weakness. It was only a few students, ones of her close friends, that knew about it. After living in the mansion for some time, Maya grew accustom to living with other mutants and learned to love them as her family. She would do anything for them.
History Add on A year into her stay, Echo had to leave the Academy when her mother had a stroke. It was all so sudden that she didn't have time to inform any of her friends or her boyfriend Chance. Maya flew to the city as soon as she could to find her mother in a coma. She was so scared that her mother would die in the hospital Maya never left her bed side.
It wasn't until the first week that Maya decided it was time to find somewhere to live and work. She found a job in a dance studio, teaching young students how to dance. Along with a good job, there was a flat above the studio that was cheap. It was perfect for her. As Maya settled down into her new schedule of working, visiting her mother; she found some spare time to pick up a few classes at community college. They were mostly dance classes, but she did enjoy the teaching courses. It was only two classes and not nearly enough for her to get a degree in anything. It was just a way to keep busy. That way she couldn't think about her mother or the family she had back in Boston.
A few months into her new life, Maya's mother died. Gloria Lopez never woke from her coma and never got to see her daughter. Maya never understood her mother, she had always been more of her father's daughter. It didn't take long for Maya to get over the loss of her mother. It was harsh to think about it that way, but Maya never actually knew the woman. To her she was just a shadow in her memories.
Maya thought about going back to the Massachusetts Academy, but she didn't think she'd be welcomed back so soon after leaving. So Maya spend more of her time working and going to classes, like clockwork. Before she knew it, she had earned her degree in teaching and minored in dance. That was four years of her life.
It was time for Maya to return back to Boston and the Academy. Luckily Miss Frost welcomed her back, but on a faculty level. Maya was to be the dance instructor and the fill in for training sessions.
RP Sample:
Her golden bronzed skin shone in the sunlight as Maya walked down the steps to the front porch. The girl walked on her tip toes as she gracefully bounded down each step. Now that she knew the steps of a ballerina, she couldn't stomp around anymore. The sun was even brighter outside. It was the middle of the day and most of the students at the Academy were out, enjoying the day to get away from the school. Maya- despite her affinity to fun- wanted to just relax this afternoon. It was a Saturday, the best day according to her, and she wanted to be away from the crowds.
It was always awkward to hang with a bunch of teens. They were all talking with each other, fast and most of the time with food in their mouths. It was hard for her to decipher their conversation. Even if she was amazing at reading lips, it was always hindered by a chunk of burger or even a french fry. Maya didn't want to complicate things.
