It may have been late at night, probably around midnight or so, but the girl didn't mind. Penny couldn't wait until Christmas. She had seen how the Rockefeller Plaza looked in movies and what not, and now she would be able to experience for real. But alas it wasn't even Halloween yet, so the Plaza was still it's same old self. Didn't stop the girl from invisioning it though. Penny took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly. There was just something about New York that she loved and made it feel like home.
Brown eyes were closed, as she was soaking up the ambeinance, so she didn't notice the person approaching her. It wasn't until she felt her purse being torn off her shoulder that her eyes snapped open. "Hey!" The chubby little mutant tried to take off after the purse snatcher.

He needed to get away for a while. Hell, everyone else got a chance to leave Genosha once in a while, why couldn't he be entitled to a getaway, at least for a day, or night in this case. Taking a long, deep drag of his cigarette in a vain attempt to keep warm, Mortimer exhaled a smoky cloud and looked out onto Rockefeller Plaza from where he sat, perched atop the statue of Prometheus, shadowed behind his arm before taking another drag of his cigarette.
Unlike the others, however, he couldn't just wander around like a normal person. He had to be careful, take precautions in order to make sure no one found out about him. At least it was winter, and it explained the huge jacket, the hood and face mask, the gloves, the long pants and the boots. No one would be the wiser, at least he hoped.
Sighing again and putting out his cigarette against the statue, Mortimer hopped into the shadows just above Rockefeller Plaza, stuffing his hands into his pockets and gained his balance, just as the purse snatcher ran into him. Out of self defense and reflex, he grabbed the man by his shoulders and threw him over him, slamming his foot down hard on his chest with a snarl, fists clenched as he looked down at the now unconscious man...with a purse?
That was weird.

The girl was huffing and puffing by the time she caught up to the purse snatcer. She slid to a stop when she saw the man who took the bad man down. Well she didn't really see him but she saw the bundled figure. "Thank you so much. I don't know what I would have done if he had made off with my purse. I got everything in there." Penny snatched her purse back up and started going through it until she located her wallet.
Once her wallet was found she pulled out a five dollar bill. "I'd give you more, but it's all I can really afford to spend right now." That being said she tried to shove the money in the man's hands. "Thank you." Before she could stop herself, Penny gave him a hug and then pulled back quickly, slightly embarrassed.

Between being approached by a chubby girl, getting thanked, hugged, and shoved money at, Mortimer was not only flustered, but confused as he stared wordlessly at the money. He coughed, an aftermath of smoking and attacking all at once, and looked to her with a shake of his head.
"Uh...fanks, ducky, but I really didn' take 'im down fer you," He put the money back into her hand and closed her fingers over it. It wasn't like he needed the money anyway.
"'E jus' happened t' run int' me, an' it was reflex...but I'm glad it got yeh yer purse back." If he could at least do some good, sometime, that was all he needed, at least once in a while.

Penny looked down as he closed her hands over the money. "Even so you did help me out. I have to do something to pay you back, it's only right. Um... do you drink coffee?" Maybe she could at least buy him a cup of coffee or something. One would never really think that they'd get robbed or anything like that. It always happened to others although this was New York so she should have expected it.
Again she hugged him, because that is the type of person she is. "Let me buy you coffee, dinner, or something. I mean I know it was a good deed, unintentional, but still a good deed. It can't go by without some sort of reward." It was only fair and the right thing to do. Besides it was nice meeting new people and she was even more grateful that she hadn't had to use her curse on him.

He flushed and looked around nervously as she hugged him again; who was this girl? Why was she being so friendly with a stranger? Didn't she know of all the bad guys that lived in New York City? Jeez, and just from the news too. He figured if she was gonna be like this, he might as well stick with her, at the very least until she got home. Wouldn't want her getting mugged again.
"U-uh...coffee sounds fine, jus' fine." Besides, he needed to warm up somehow. Being mostly amphibian-like, he was cold blooded naturally. Genosha was a tropical environment, so he was fine there, but when he used to live in England, and now here, he needed to cover up constantly, and keep moving constantly, or else he'd pass out, or at the worst, die.

To say Penny was a bit of an innocent was an understatement. She was so sweet that a lot of the kids teased her about going into sugar shock, and often about that being her gift. But then when you could literally scare someone to death, one tends to try to counter act that however they can. Penny tries very hard to see the good in people and hopes that everyone is decent. Deep down she knows it's no the case but she can't help it. There was too much pain and suffering by natural causes, they didn't need to add manmade ones.
When he agreed to coffee she grinned. "Oh I'm Penny by the way. It's a pleasure to meet you. Well maybe we should get going before he wakes up." Brown eyes narrowed as she scanned the area trying to remember where that coffee shop that she loves was.

"Mortimer," He replied as he eyed the unconscious man on the ground, then looked back to the young girl with those yellowy eyes of his. No matter how much he disguised himself, those always seemed to show through, especially in the dark like this. Unfortunately, he couldn't help it.
"Well, while you're lookin', le's keep movin'." He suggested and took her arm, moving her along with him as he tried to keep warm. He still shivered pretty noticeably as they walked, and she'd be able to feel it as long as she was touching him.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mortimer." She'd seen some fairly odd things in her time at Xavier's so yellow eyes didn't freak her out. Her own mutant ability didn't give off any kind of physical notice that she was different from everyone else. Sunshine hated her ability with a passion but even she understood that there were times it had it's uses even if she didn't like using it.
Brown eyes looked down the same time his did and she nodded. "Good point. Come on it's not too far from here." Happily she linked arms with him and frowned a bit when she felt him shivering so bad. Having stopped and talked had helped her get her breath back so she quickened the pace a bit to get him out of the cold.

Before he knew it, they were walking into a coffee shop, instantly engulfing him in warmth and the smell of coffee, to which he sighed in relief, though he was still shivering a bit. He looked around quickly and led her over to an empty table, ignoring the strange looks he was getting about how bundled up he was. He sat her down first before he sat in the seat across from her, unconsciously pulling his legs up into a crouching position, his knees bent as his feet rested on the chair he sat on.
Mortimer watched her curiously as he wrapped his arms around himself, waiting for her to say something, anything, to break the awkward silence of the room as people watched them and whispered to each other.

Penny headed into the coffee shop and sighed with relief. It was warm and the smell of coffee always gave her warm fuzzy feelings. Not to mention the baked goods that were there as well. "I love it here, especially the pastries. They rock." The words were said after they were seated and she grinned across at him. Being used to stares and they like, Penny just ignored them and didn't even truly notice them.
"So what kind of coffee do you like? Are you hungry too?" She was glad he didn't want to go to dinner, because she didn't have enough for a full meals. This place was cheap but nice so she could swing something to eat and the coffees. Seriously she was going to need to look into getting a part time job instead of just doing odd jobs here and there. "So, what do you do? I mean are you like a tourist, live around here?"

He'd barely heard what she said about the pastries, looking around at the people staring at him and sending them nasty looks back, to which they all tensed up and looked away; it didn't help with all of them though. He was, after all, still wearing bundles and bundles of clothing in a practically seventy degree room, maybe warmer.
When she began asking him about the coffee, and the pastries, and where he lived, Mortimer snapped back to attention and his eyes softened a bit.
"Uhm, straight black...nuffin' in it." He replied as he rubbed his gloved hands together. "No pastries...I'm not hungry, really." He nodded gratefully toward her though.
"I...s'pose y' could say I'm a tourist...yeah, I don't live 'round 'ere." Mortimer sighed and rubbed his hands harder; why was it so damn hard to get warm again?! What'd he have to do, go lay out under a sun lamp?
"What about you, ducky? You a native to these parts?" He asked, not wanting to make her feel awkward; he needed to contribute to the conversation.

The poor man was still cold and she wondered if it was a genetic thing. Penny wasn't really one to see 'human' and 'mutant' she just saw people. Like she wasn't one to see African-American or white, she just saw people. So it never even came into her mind to question why he was so bundled and it was so warm. A grin tugged her lips as told her what kind he wanted. So she ordered two regular coffees but made sure there was cream and sugar for her. "I like mine sweet. I can handle no cream as long as I have sugar, but I can't drink it unless it's sweet." He hadn't asked but she couldn't stop herself from offering anyway.
The girl grinned when he said he was a tourist. "I'm a transplant actually. Not a native New Yorker, but I live here now. I'm still actually exploring and can't wait for the Christmas stuff to be up around here. Ice skating, the big tree, and all of that jazz. I can't wait for Halloween either." When it occured to her that she was babbling, Penny promptly snapped her mouth shut and concentrated on the coffee that had just arrived.

Mortimer chuckled softly and lifted his face mask slightly, just enough to take a sip of his coffee, relieved as it quickly warmed his insides and allowed him to relax a bit, leaning back against his seat. He'd lifted the mask just enough, not enough for others around them to see, but unfortunately, enough for her to get a glance at his green skin before he lowered the mask again and looked to her.
"Go on, ducky, talk. I'm lis'nin'." He smiled a bit, reassuring her that she wasn't talking his ear off or anything. Truthfully, he was enjoying the company. It wasn't often he got to talk to anyone that wasn't on Genosha. In fact, he didn't talk to most people anyway.
"So, y' like Christmas then?" He asked; it wasn't his favorite of holidays, mostly because he never got anything. Nor were people nice to him despite the fact. Halloween was nice, since he could go out and no one would stare.

Her smile grew a bit. "I don't think you want to hear me go on and on about coffee. Needless to say though, at times when I have too much caffeine and sugar I can get a little crazy." As sweet as he was to say he was listening, Penny really didn't want to bore him with the details of her affair with caffeine and sugar. "What kind of drinks do you like? Honestly, my favorite kind is this really good mocha mint cappuccino they have here. But that stuffs expensive even for this cheap place. Which is why I think of it as a treat." She grinned and sipped her coffee.
The girl's grin got even wider. "I love all the holidays. I love Christmas for the lights and the trees and everything is so pretty. Halloween is so much fun because of the costumes and creativity of it all. I just love holidays in general. Any reason to get out and do something." She sipped her coffee again and looked over at him. "What about you?"
