It was sometimes way too difficult for Roberto Da Costa to resist going outdoor. Today, unfortunately, was one of those “sometimes”. Instead of venturing outside, a mountain of essays obscured his view. It was disheartening really. With each one he read he found himself wondering how the hell any of these students could be considered Hell Fire Club material. He didn’t voice this aloud, naturally, or think on it too much. The scant substance in the typed pages was enough to aggravate him. Grumbling to himself, Roberto switched on his music while he penned his notes into the margins of an essay entitled “Kant we fix it?”
He needed a drink…. A drink and a priest.

Amber had been heading back in from getting a coffee when she saw one of the staff’s lights on. The door wasn’t shut all the way so she knocked and stuck her head in. ”Mr. Da Costa? How you doin’?” She’d never really gotten a chance to talk to him yet and he looked about as thrilled at grading papers as she did about doing her homework. ”Need me to get you anything? Latte, whiskey, duct tape for the students?” The last little bit was said with a grin. He really did look frustrated but then the kids here weren’t know for the academics, well maybe Val but that was about it.

Quickly Roberto turned his music down just a little bit and looked over towards the door. “Would all three be too much to ask?” he quipped with a slight laugh while he continued making his notes. “I swear, each paper I read just makes my head hurt more and more,” he joked as he set his pen down finally. He closed the essay and just contemplated setting the entire pile on fire. He reached into the drawer of his desk and pulled out a bottle of Cachaça and set it on the table top and snagged two shot glasses. “Thought I’ve got some of the medicine for it right here if you are interested in joining me,” he offered as he opened up the bottle and turned over the glasses.

Amber snickered when he asked for all three. She stepped inside and sat down across from him. ”You provide the liquor, we can split my coffee and I think I have some duct tape somewhere.” She moved over and sat on the edge of his desk facing him. Her fingertips glowed as she started to rub his temples. ”You need to relax some. They are a bit rambunctious and all you can really do is hope that they actually do pay attention.” She grinned at him. ”I’ll be happy to join you for a drink or two. Lord knows we both need a break.” She moved to sit in a chair across from him. The poor guy seemed to actually care about his students. Too bad the students didn’t seem to give a shit about the amount of work he was putting in.

Roberto’s eyelids lulled heavily as he felt the definite feeling of his headache lift. Now, that was a handy trick to have in one’s arsenal. Unfortunately, Roberto’s gifts did not treat headaches. “If they do pay attention, I’ll end up with a heart attack,” he said with a brief roll of his eyes. Unfortunately he knew that Philosophy and business ethics weren’t really a primary point of interest in teenagers. Roberto accepted that fact after his first class but he would have at least wished for his students to try. “A break sounds perfect.” He laughed as he poured the Cachaça into the shot glass and handed her one of them.

Amber grinned as she watched his reaction to how she dealt with the headache. She’s suffered worse before so it should be gone within the hour. She didn’t know if Da Costa knew how her powers worked and she wasn’t about to enlighten him. A small chuckle escaped when he said he’d have a heart attack. ”That wouldn’t be good but I know what you mean. It would send us all into shock if they actually showed up for classes. Ever feel like it’s more a halfway house than a school?” She grinned and nodded when he agreed to the break. She found a coffee mug and gave him half of her latte. ”Good because I need one as well.” She picked up her shot and held it up to him. ”Cheers.” OK that was some good shit there but she didn’t want to get totally wasted.

He had a slight idea how her powers worked and on some level. The mutant figured that if she were so forward to use her abilities then who was he to stop her? She was an adult and could use her powers as she so pleased. “I feel like that every day,” Roberto said with a slight laugh and shook his head. “Though I suppose I couldn’t have expected otherwise.” His shoulders shrugged as Amber poured some of her latte into the mug and he took his own shot glass in hand. “Exclamações1,” he replied as he downed the shot and let out that sharp post-burn breath that meant it had hit him perfectly. It would burn through his system quickly, but that initial kick was enough for him. He closed the bottle and set it aside. “Well, that definitely helped.”

Amber smirked at his comment about feeling like that every day. Yeah she felt like that too, especially when they come to her after training. ”Guess not but then they are a bunch of rich kids. Guess that kind of makes it worse.” The words weren’t bitter just stated rather bluntly actually. She took the shot and was proud of herself for not starting to cough. She was thankful he put it away since she didn’t need to get wasted in front of him. ”So what do you teach? We really haven’t met, I’m Amber or Sacrifice if you’d prefer.” She knew the basics of who was who but hadn’t met them all just yet. It was nice having others to talk tough so she was happy to get to know him.

Roberto let out a hearty, yet somewhat curt, laugh before shaking his head. “I’m debating on whether or not I should take offense to that,” he added with a roll of his chocolate colored gaze. “I came from money,” he explained, “but I don’t believe I’ve ever had the sense of entitlement these kids have.” He took a sip of the coffee the woman had split with him and offered a hand. “Roberto Da Costa, philosophy and business Ethic,” he introduced. “Judging by how you eased that headache, I take it you’re our new medic.” He chuckled and spared a brief wink. “Good luck. We apparently waste through them like a box of bandaids.”

Amber looked over at him and sighed a bit. ”You aren’t a teenager now are you? Besides even if you did come from money you don’t seem to act like it. It wasn’t meant to be an insult to you and I apologize.” Honestly, she hadn’t meant to insult him and she frowned a bit at the thought that she might have. The young woman looked up as he introduced himself. ”Amber Ryan and you are quite correct. Well, since you’ve compared me to a band aid, does this make us even?” She winked at him to let him know she was teasing and took a sip of her own coffee. ”Philosophy and Business Ethics? So two separate classes or does the philosophy center around business?” He probably thought it was a stupid question but she asked it anyway.

Seriously, he had thought that at least his tone would have indicated that he was kidding about the offense. He could have cared less, naturally, if someone were insulting him. He was the head of a billion dollar corporation and had the type of power that could make a man crap his pants. Spoiled and rich was a comment that paid the least amount of tax onto his self esteem. “It’s not problem. Apparently my sarcasm is too dry at times,” he said with a light laugh. “Perhaps that’s why my students don’t like me,” he mused thoughtfully but without the care that the statement could have intended. So long as he was educating those children and getting through to them, he could have cared less about their favor. He could be hated if that suited his pupils. So long as they grasped what he was talking about or thought of them just for a moment more, it would make that sort of resentment worth it.
“I suppose it makes us even,” Roberto commented with a slight scoff as if it were only a start. “Two separate classes,” he explained simply. “One is an introduction class that gets any future college credit out of the way and the other is hopefully going to shape the decisions they will make as they inherit mommy and daddy’s fortune five-hundred companies. If they are going to be spoiled, I think they should at least do so somewhat responsibly,” he cracked as he took another sip of his coffee.

Amber arched a brow and chuckled anyway. ”Sarcasm or not I should have checked with my brain before my mouth opened, especially around here. I think I’m one of poorest people working here.” Surprisingly that didn’t come out bitter. She snickered at that comment. ”I don’t think they like any of us. They probably think they are smarter than we are and the sad thing is, most of them probably are.” She pulled a face at that thought and then grinned over at him and winked. ” But I admit I don’t understand the world that most who come here live in.” She didn’t understand most of the references and that wasn’t even just the students. But then this was a school for the rich and beautiful mutants so she should have expected feeling like a bit of an outsider.
”Ah I see there is a dreamer there underneath the business fascade.” She grinned and sipped her coffee and shifted a bit. OK maybe that broken rib hadn’t healed all the way after all. Well she did have that punctured lung first. Damn she misjudged the healing time. She rubbed her side and let the pain pass. ”Do you ever go out and have fun? Or is your fun reading?” She was genuinely curious and watched him as she sipped her coffee.

“I think you might be beat by Mr. Madrox. When we picked him up he was living with his grandmother and facing jail time.” He shrugged. “I, personally, don’t really asses our students based on their financial means. You never know when you will get the next business genius in your class that doesn’t have a dime in an account.” If that didn’t exemplify the fact that he was a bit of a dreamer, then what else would? “Intelligence doesn’t mean anything unless you can apply it properly. Or at least that’s what I think about it, anyways. You could be the smartest person in the world and not amount to shit.” Honestly, Roberto could have cared less about how intelligent his students were. He just wanted to get them to think beyond the facades they played to so well.
Roberto smirked. “I suppose,” he commented in the accusation of being a dreamer. A realist had manifested itself beneath his bronzed surface but he didn’t bother to refute the idealism that still remained, however, deep into his core. His brow quirked when he noticed her shifting and wondered just what had happened before she had come into his dormitory. “I do both,” he said with a slight smirk. “That is, of course, when I have time. I haven’t come across it too often though,” he said with a laugh. “Yourself?”

”What was he busted for?” Amber didn’t really know the students that well so she didn’t know who had done what or where they came from. She really wasn’t one that they’d talked to often. She nodded in agreement to his assessment. ”Those that don’t have tend to want to be able to have and will more than likely be the ones that you have to look out for in the future.” Money was something that could seriously go to someone’s head especially if they weren’t used to having it. At least if they were born with it and took it for granted there was less chance of them becoming power hungry, or so she hoped and prayed. ”You could also be the most beautiful person in the world but if you are a dick you would be a total turn off. Personality and common sense are the two most important things a person can have.”
The girl smirked and shrugged. ”Dreaming isn’t a bad thing it actually helps us figure out our goals.” She sipped her coffee and looked over at him. ”Both huh?” She grinned and shook her head. ”You need to make time. Me? Oh geez, dirt bike racing, movies, reading, I like playing pool too. Anything fun, slightly competitive and relaxing.” She took a sip only to find out her cup was empty and threw it away then looked back at him. ”You need a break break, make time right now and we can.. do something because I really don’t want to go back to studying yet. If you aren’t opposed that is.” He’d probably say no but at least she offered.
