Mutantkind
They said we would never witness evolution, it happens too slowly. They were wrong. For decades, perhaps longer, individuals have been born, and over time shown remarkable abilities, like nothing the world has ever seen before. But those that were in a position to find others of their kind, were also in a position to know that Humanity was not ready for such people. Mutants.
Professor Charles Xavier, a Veteran of the War in Korea, and also a mutant, one of if not the most powerful telepath on the planet, was becoming aware of more mutants everyday. As he met these people, he realised a terrible pattern that was growing. With a great wealth that had been passed down to him from his parents, combined with finances he had generated himself during his life, the Professor built a Sanctuary for these people, converting his own mansion home into a home, in the guise of a school.
He was not the only person to come to such a realisation, Emma Frost, CEO of Frost Industries and a telepath of immense ability in her own right, was discovering much of the same information as Charles, and put some of her vast personal fortune into the purchase and renovation of an old school in the Snow Valley of Massachusetts. Her motives, however, were not so pure as the Professors. While she had the protection of Mutants at heart, she was also finding prime targets to be groomed and become members of the Hellfire Club, a secret society of wealthy and influential individuals.
Xavier became aware of Emma Frost's Massachusett's Academy very quickly, and while he was on a one man crusade to protect mutants from being victimised, he could not match her resources and the speed at which she could reach mutants before him. Over several professional meetings with Emma Frost, Charles became aware of some of her less innocent ideals, and was suddenly aware that allying with her would serve no purpose, he needed to protect mutants from both humanity and from the other mutants that would abuse their abilities.
When it was clear that Xavier could not match Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club's capabilities, and all seemed lost, an old friend of Xavier arrived at his mansion, Erik Lehnsherr. The two quickly went about designing a device to aid them in finding mutants, the result, was Cerebro.
Suddenly Xavier was aware of Mutants far outside the reaches of Emma Frosts telepathy, and within months the student population of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters was rising, being passed off as a totally normal boarding school.
Not everything in the school was innocent however, just as Ms. Frost was grooming pupils to take places in the Hellfire Club, Erik was watching the students of Xavier's, selecting those that understood Mutants were superior to humans, and was preparing them to travel to a country he had been developing for over a decade, Genosha, now a populated city state in its own right, ruled by Magneto as Sovereign, with his children ruling in his absence.
Even though secret intentions are behind both schools, both schools do have mutant interests at heart, and the mutants are safe, they have sanctuary. But that may soon end, as the government is aware of mutants, behind closed doors ideas are exchanged and a splinter cell of S.H.I.E.L.D. has its mind set on destroying the problem before it ever starts.
