Playing the drums: Shane has been playing drums since she was in middle school. It was the one instrument in her music class that she actually had any kind of raw talent to use. That and it helped burn quite a bit of her energy since it was the more physical of the instruments. She worked really hard and ended up nailing the song Wipeout, that is her claim to fame at this point in time.
Singing: When she took music, she took the whole deal and was also in the school choir. She wasn't as good as the leads, but she is good when it comes to ballads and as a back up singer. However, she prefers being a drummer and when she gets the urge to sing, she'd go to karaoke where it didn't matter if she was all that good or not. She has more talent then she actually gives herself credit for.
Learning music by ear: Shane never learned to actually read music properly. She had always played it by ear, and was so good at being able to pick it up, that unless there were changes made, you couldn't tell she was actually not paying attention to the notes.
Story telling : She has a gift for being able to make up stories off the top of her head. She would make stories for the neighborhood kids (started when she was about six), and they'd all turn her stories into plays for the kids to goof around with. She's fond of pirates and fantasy based stories, so there was always a sea battle or mythical fight to save the earth. She's been encouraged to write books and screen plays and had been thinking about it, but her accident happened and now she's not so sure.
Personality:
Before she lost her sight and her powers kicked in, Shane was extremely laid back and bit of a prankster. She loved to laugh and have fun. She was a tiny bit of a rule breaker but nothing major. She was also an excellent tree climber. Though she'd never done anything illegal she was one that would come up with ideas, like sneaking out to the beach when they were supposed to be in class.
At this point, she's actually quite terrified of her blindness and her powers. Shane is a bit withdrawn and tries very hard not to get too close to people. She can't control her powers yet so she's afraid she might do irreparable damage if she touches someone. She doesn't know if her powers work by anything other than her hands, or if it's total skin contact. It's not, but she's afraid to find out otherwise.
Somewhere deep inside there is still that girl who loved to have fun and pull pranks. The girl who just laughed off the insults and teased right back. Once she overcomes her disability and learns to control her powers, that girl will reemerge once more. Every now and then, when she thinks she's alone the 'old' Shane comes back out in spades, and that's usually when she gets near a drum set or a song comes on that she loves to sing. Finding her won't be difficult if someone is willing to take the time to do so.

Mutant Abilities:
Corrosion: Shane has the power to corrode materials, organic or otherwise, by touch. This means she can turn a solid rock to dust, metal into a weak and rusted piece of nothing. She can even corrode human flesh, causing it to wither and die. She is immune to her own powers.
Weaknesses: (
When it comes to her powers, her main weakness is surface area. She can only corrode up to a two feet circumference around the hand or hands that are touching the surface. If she only puts one hand against a wall she can only disintegrate two feet in that one area. To disintegrate more she'd have to move her hand. If she uses both hands she can do up to four feet.
When it comes to the corrosion of human flesh, her surface area is limited even more. She can only say, corrode a person's hand if that is all she's touching.
She has to have skin contact in order for her powers to work. Meaning if she's wearing a glove then she can't corrode anything. To corrode the flesh of another she has to have skin to skin contact.
At this point in time, Shane does not have control of her abilities and has to wear special gloves to stop the corrosion. However, she does have the ability to control her powers, once she learns how.
Her physical limitation is the fact that she is blind, and only has been blind for approximately one year. She is still trying to learn how to live as a blind person and her other senses are just starting to compensate for it. So, right now she's is quite overpowered when her senses decide to go haywire on her.
History:
When Shane Matthews was born, it was actually a great thing. Her parents had been told they couldn't have children and she was a miracle baby. She was also the only child born to the two. As a baby she was quite a handful, and fairly lively. It was a headache and a joy for her parents when she learned to crawl. They could barely catch her, she was everywhere. She was also a happy child even as a baby. Crying wasn't something she had done often, but she'd be up late at night laughing and absolutely nothing.
When she learned to walk, her parents had to do some serious renovations on the house and get everything up out of her way. At about three she realized she didn't like having clothes on and did the typical kiddie thing of stripping as she ran. Of course she had to do this at the most embarrassing moments for her parents. But she thought it was funny so it was all good. Her mother was quite relieved and yet depressed when her firecracker of a daughter started preschool. Her teacher actually adored the little one and she made a lot of friends.
The same happened as she started going to elementary school and on up. It's said that the x-gene comes into effect during puberty and usually during some extreme circumstance. However, Shane's life was fairly uneventful when it came to tragedy and her powers never manifested. Until her fifteenth birthday. She and her parents were on their way to her birthday dinner when there was a major ten car accident. Her and her family were stuck in the middle. Upon impact her head hit the door hard, mainly her temporal region, and she the car become crunched on all sides. When she woke up she was still in the car but she couldn't see, and she was stuck, the emergency workers tried to get her out. The girl panicked and tried to push the front seat off of her.
Shane pushed with all her might, and she couldn't see what was happening. Suddenly her hands went through the back of the seat and she fell forward. Her latent powers had kicked in. The rescue time finally got her out and when she grabbed the arm of the man who was helping her, the sleeves of his jacket started to erode away. He yelped and she got dropped on the ground. Her hands landed on the pavement and the corrosion continued. The X-Men known as Pixie, happened to be at the scene and she saw what happened to the girl. In a desperate move to save not only the teenager but the people around her, Pixie had grabbed the girl and had taken off for the Institute. Shane had passed out once more due to the fear and stress and had no idea what happened. Her parents had been left behind at the accident and were taken to the hospital.
She spent several months in the medical bay as they tried to repair her damaged eyes, but to know avail. Shane was blind. Her parents had gotten contacted by the Institute, once they themselves had been released from the hospital. They explained what their daughter's situation was and that she was located at the Institute. Now she'd only been out of the medical bay for about a month, and is still trying to get adjusted to being blind, and finding out if she can control her powers. She has yet to actually make any friends, and her classes are nearly impossible to go through. She doesn't know how to read braille yet because she can't touch the pages without them being destroyed.
Shane received special gloves to be used until her powers are under control. She has harbored a love-hate relationship with her cane and prays she gains control of her powers so that she can get a seeing eye dog. The one thing she had missed the most was her music class in school, where she played the drums.

The blind girl had been stumbling from room to room. Out of frustration she had tossed her cane somewhere and now wished that she hadn't. A frustrated sigh escaped her lips as she bumped into another closed door. She knocked and listened to see if anyone was in there. When she tried the door it was unlocked and she slipped in. She didn't even bother looking for a light, why should she? It's not like it would do her any good. She couldn't see.
Her hands were out in front of her as she made her way through the room. She tripped over a chair and fell on to some sort of step. Her hand reached out and she felt the music stand. Carefully she pulled herself up and winced a bit as her knees hurt. Well, she seemed to be in a music room. So, she made her way carefully, getting a rough idea about the set up, and bumped into a larger item. She heard the familiar clang of the symbols, and Shane found her first smile since her accident.
The girl made her way around the drum set and found the stool. She sat down and felt around until she found the drumsticks. Her head tilted a bit as she tested each one out. Her smile widened and her head started to bob a bit. ”Gimme a beat.” She snickered to herself and started up a drum solo.
