Skills:
Even though he didn't spend a whole lot of time in school, he's pretty good at reading, and he often feels the need to make people aware that he's not an inane or naive country bumpkin that sits around chewing on grains and picking his nose. On the other hand, Sam spent thirteen years on a farm -- he's great with animals, farm machinery, and cars.
Personality: Sam was brought up with ethics. He is kind to women, elders, and children. Respect is almost his number one priority when he isn't fighting, although it's not much of a priority during battle. He doesn't give up, never backs down. Women are not his favorite to fight, but he will, if necessary. He isn't very religious, but would rather wait until he got married. He is pro-life, republican, but doesn't like his government. Sam is usually an upbeat person, but has the tendency to change moods. He doesn't like to cry, and keeps most of his thoughts to himself. He is proud of his background.

The Mutant
Codename: Cannonball
Mutant Abilities: Thermo-Chemical Energy Field Propulsion: Cannonball possesses the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it from his skin. This energy is used as thrust to cause his body to be propelled through the air, like his namesake, at great heights and speeds with considerable maneuverability. He can control his speed and direction through sheer act of will. At first he could only release this energy from his feet, but now he can fire it from almost any part of his body, to a wide variety of affects.
Blast Field: This energy also manifests itself as an impenetrable and virtually indestructible blast field. He can use this blast-field to: function as a personal shield or extending it to encompass others, shape the field around another person to imprison them, or absorb outside kinetic impact into his own energy supply, and then re-channel it to increase the bludgeoning power of his blows or create explosive shock waves upon impact.
Metahuman Durability: possesses metahuman durability due to his blast field.
Weaknesses: Sam must focus to turn on his blast field. It may take him 20 seconds at a time to start his blast field, making him a sitting duck. It especially takes a while to extend his field to others. His lack of confidence in himself.
Although he is nearly invincible mid-flight, when he lands, it's not the same principle. Flying completely fatigues him, and after a long flight or battle, he must take a day or so to rest, as well as a whole lot of aspirin.
History:
Samuel Guthrie grew up in a Kentucky Coal Mining family, as the eldest of ten children. His life had never been much to think about, until his father died when Sam was only eleven. To keep his family's money from decreasing, the boy took up his father's mantle, and began working at the mines. Friends of his father also worked with him, and soon enough, Sam was a strong, working child.
After working in the mines for two years, Sam was just one of the guys. One day, while he and one of his father's closest friends were working, Sam had no idea that his mutant powers had already manifested, and his blast field had accidentally turned on, and was also working on his father's friend. Moments later, the mine collapsed. But, before any coal fell on them, Sam grabbed the worker, and flew out, without a scratch on the two.
Living at home with his powers for more than ten years, Sam decided he needed help, and departed to look for others like him. The bumpkin scoured and scoured, but had absolutely no luck at all. After traveling for a few months, he stumbled upon North Salem, New York, and struck up a conversation with an attendant of Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters. Somehow or another, it came out that he was...well, gifted, and the student led them to his soon-to-be sanctuary.
Since then, Sam has become a self-decided valued member of the Institute, being a member of the X-Men and the flight teacher at the school.

As a pair of drones sprinted side-by-side towards the country bumpkin, Sam finally found the energy in him to reactivate his blast field, forcing an explosion to propel him into the air as soon as the orange aura activated around him. Executing a quick spin that he had been trying to master for the last couple of months, the mutant flew behind the two, whom, strangely enough, had been following the young man with their eyes during the entire ordeal. Sam found it strange that they didn't even attempt to shoot at him, despite the fact that he was about to smash their skulls into the wall.
And so he did. Finding himself temporarily unoccupied, he turned his attention to his former teacher, Storm. "Hey, 'Ro, y'know what Ah never understood?" Not giving her the time to respond, he very quickly flew closer to her general area, in case she couldn't hear him. "These bad guys with all these grunts to do all their dirty work. How come they don't seem to give 'em training? Ah never came across one of these guys that was even kind of a problem for me, or one that would pose a problem to our special class. Kinda sad, really." Sam paused for a moment, taking advantage of this monologue to regain all of the energy he had wasted earlier.
"Ah mean, they might as well be the salad bar at the Golden Corral. People eating there are hungry, they want fresh steaks, not a dumb salad. Who're the big bad villains kidding, anyways?" Sam sighed, and turned back to the poor souls, one having thrown a punch at the bumpkin. "Son, Ah'm talking!" Without his blast field on, the mutant punched the holographic figure with his bare hands (He had forgotten between then and the last time he had gone hand-to-hand with a fake person in the Danger Room how little they actually felt like people.) "Gah, dangit!" The bumpkin cringed in pain, his punch having lost the power it once had. The young man had to block his way out of a painful beating while he turned his blast field back on. "C'mon now!"
At long last, the orange aura returned, and the young man was able to push his drastically increased strength into the drone, knocking his fading image to the ground. "How you holding up, 'Roro?"
++OOC Info++
Player: Hayden
Any plans in mind for the character? Nothing in particular. Sam's leadership trait will definitely be downgraded, and he'll act more as a background player until something strong induces confidence. I'm a tad sad that there isn't a Paige already playing, but rest assured that when there is one, he will be more, for lack of a better word, badass.
