++Application for Enrollment++
The Person
Name:
Faith Chase
Age:
17
Place of Birth:
Phoenix, AZ, USA
Applying too: Xavier's School for the gifted
In what capacity: Student
Family:
Father: Paul Chase
Mother: Felicia Chase-Smith
Height:
5'5"
Weight:
130 lbs.
Appearance:
Faith appears to be like any other adolescent girl, if all the others where into rock music and would wear black almost constantly. Some see her as a gothic even though her clothing isn't as extravagant as most goths. She usually wears plain black, be it shirts, jeans, skirts or socks. The few pieces of clothing that do have print on them are bandshirts. When an environment is not artificially darkened by her own powers she always wears her shades, with lenses made of smoked glass and designed to let little to no light through.
Skills:
Sleep on one ear - Caligo has learned that those who sleep to heavily get robbed, raped or worse. She always seems to sleep with one eye open and is usually one of the first to react to commotions in the middle of the night.
Street Smarts - Caligo learned how to survive on the streets under the tutelage of her gang. She learned what neighbourhoods are safe, which aren't. Where to get food and money in legal but mostly illegal ways.
Sleight of hand - On the streets everybody has to earn their keep. Caligo learned fast that you can either sell something people want or you can steal something of reasonable worth. She was trained by her gang to pick pockets and made a reasonable living off it.
Personality:
To the outside world she seems like a bit of a rebel, defiant about almost everything that could be considered mainstream or popular. She never really understood pop-culture and decided it was best not to have anything to do with it. Those who do conform to the mainstream run the risk of getting commented upon in passing by.
When her true nature emerges, usually when she thinks she is alone or is caught off guard, she feels lonely and misunderstood. Even when she tries she can't really grasp why people would all want to be the same but she herself does miss the feeling of belonging. She has made herself believe that she choose for the distance between her and everyone else. The truth is more gruesome and finds its roots in her troubled youth.

The Mutant
Codename:
Caligo
Mutant Abilities:
Umbrakinesis - Caligo can manipulate existing light. In her case she can push away the photons in a certain area to create a Dark shadowy mist (in case of open spaces) or a complete darkness (in case of a closed off room). By diminishing the amount of photons in a certain room, light source or beam of light she can take away intensity of the light itself. Making it gloomy and darker. She herself is always at the centre of the darkness, she cannot place dark patches of shadows in other places. The shadow or mist like darkness originates from her and spreads across a certain area or room from there.
Night vision - In addition to this Caligo is able to see in the dark just as well as any normal person can see in the light. Shadows, darkness or other forms of absence of light, either natural or manipulated, do not hinder her eyesight.
Weaknesses:
If at some point Caligo uses her ability to make a big area or an entire room dark and someone were to introduce a new, bright, light source, she suffers from something she calls Photon-Feedback. It's like a brain freeze on steroids. The sudden influx in Photon particles is too blame for this occurrence. The effect can physically harm her, ranging from a blow to the head feeling like a slap to a sledgehammer. If someone were to slowly increase the brightness of a light source it doesn't have as big an effect, although there would be a break-even point at which Caligo can no longer push away additional photons.
Due to her ability to see well in low light and dark environments Caligo has difficulty seeing in normal and bright light situations. Sunlight would cause her pain if she left her eyes unprotected and, at extended times, it might turn her blind. To counter this she has to wear customised sunglasses with very high UV protection (which look more like smoked glass than lenses for sunglasses), even in indoor occasions.
In addition to these mutant induced weaknesses she also has a low self esteem due to her upbringing. She finds it hard to bond with anyone and in particular with male anyones. She is never satisfied with work she delivers or assignments she completes.
History:
Faith was born as the first child to Paul and Felicia Chase, who got married when Felicia got pregnant after a one night stand. Both were raised religiously and in both families this was the only thing to do. Obviously with a relationship and marriage based on no grounds at all it was hellish from time to time, especially on weekends. As such Faith remained an only child, to an addicted and aggressive father and a mother too afraid to speak up.
She grew up a quiet kid, trying as hard as she could not to hurt anyone or anything around her, afraid to excel at anything because that would mean getting noticed and she knew getting noticed to bring on bad news. Teachers voiced their worries about this against her parents, which only lit a bad spark in her father, who later that evening forcefully reminded her that she should act normal and not be a freak all of the time.
The physical and verbal abuse pushed on into her teen years, where her hormones and age got high enough to at least try and fight it off. She became a bitter and rebellious kid. When she actually attended school she flunked every test but the truth was that she probably didn't show up for thirty percent of her classes. She was usually in the city, wrecking things with her 'friends'. When she turned fourteen she was in a bad place and she had no idea it was about to get a lot worse.
It was a Saturday night like any other in their household, around midnight her father stumbled into the house drunk like a skunk and angry at something. His team probably lost the game or something like that (as if he needed a reason), with much noise and physical force he told Felicia that it was about time that they injected their marriage with another baby. When her mother refused he repeatedly hit her.
The noise easily made its way up to Faith her room, whom was still awake but should've been in bed about two hours before. When she heard her father's abuse she wanted to run, but she had nowhere to go, she wanted to hide but there was no safe place in the house. So she curled up in a corner, lights out, eyes on the doors hoping he wouldn't walk in on her, hoping he'd just go to bed.
But that night was like any other Saturday night for them and Paul nearly kicked down the door, when he stepped inside something he saw made him even more enraged that he had been before. The corner in which Faith had tried to protect herself was hulled in a thick shadowy smoke. Making a big scene out of it Paul stepped into the room and hit the light switch. The mist immediately disappeared and Faith curled up even more into a foetal position, seemingly in physical pain. Paul beat Faith for being a mutant and then his wife for bearing him a mutant daughter and then wallowed in self pity for his shit life.
One week later Faith had gathered enough courage, she couldn't take any more, she wouldn't. She packed a single bag and left.
The three years that followed were possibly even worse than being at home. She avoided society, she avoided authority and did a lot of things God forbade. The events of the world around her drifted by fairly well without her intervention, so she stuck to where she was. Even in the mutant legislation protests and the development of a cure or suppressant for the XGene she remained where she was. During this time her growing sensitivity to light had driven her undergrounds, abandoned subway stations and lines where her home, sometimes coming out at night and even then only while wearing sunglasses against all the artificial lighting.
If it hadn't been for Xavier and his X-Men she had probably still been out on the streets, in the gutter. But after recovering from the chaos that ensued after the 3rd world war and the death of so many loved ones they were still pursuing Charles Xavier his dream and they were still helping outcast mutants trying to regain their lives.
When Faith got taken to the Mansion she was malnourished, in bad health and had little to no control over her powers. She was fed, fixed and now she is being trained in the capable hands of the Staff in the Xavier Institute, trying to regain a little of her dignity and getting another shot at life.
RP Sample:
The moment the front door slammed Faith rushed to turn off her lights and hide somewhere. The darkness didn't seem as blinding as it used to be but it would still cover her up enough, maybe tonight he wouldn't find her, maybe tonight he just went to bed.
The voices got louder, the tone more fiercely. She knew tonight would be no different from other saturdays. Curling up in her corner she sobbed, she closed her eyes, she wanted to be somewhere else so badly. But even on the insides of her eyelids the image of her father was burned.
Something sounded like it broke downstairs, another spur of poisonous anger blasted through the silence of the night. Faith just wanted it all to go away, she wanted to disappear. A shadow started to flow from her, making that specific corner even darker than it already was.
Footsteps came walking up the stairs, with each step getting closer Faith her heartbeat rose a little. The dark shadow had taken up a third of her room, her eyes tightly shut.
Then the door almost jumped out of its hinges as it slammed into the far wall, shortly after a sensation not dissimilar to being hit by her father hit her entire body. She curled up in a foetal position, the world around her a dim reality, the voices muffled and even as her father picked her up and threw her on the bed she hardly felt anything at all.
The only word that stuck in her mind was the one her father kept repeating over and over as he hit her. Mutant.
