It was a relatively cool and peaceful night and the white curtains waved in the gentle breeze flowing though the bedroom. The same bedroom that had to have been remodeled countless times on account of one of it's occupant's unstable powers. It had been a little over a month since Jean Grey had any disturbances in her sleep. She was content curled up under the sheets in Scott's embrace and it seemed that another night of peace would pass. Shortly after the couple had drifted to sleep, a familiar look of distress found it's way onto her face.
The same dream she's had for years. Fire, destruction, resurrection, the screeching of a raptor echoing through her dream world engulfed in flames. Beads of sweat trailing down her forehead as her hands gripped the sheets. Shallow breaths escaped her lips as a faint fiery aura had begun to radiate from the slumbering psionic and the room it's self had began to shake. "No!" she sprang up from the mattress gripping her hair and cringing as the raptor's screeching continued to echo in her mind. The room began trembled faster. Some of the room's furniture and their belongings took flight , drifting through the air fueled from the telekinetic energy being put out by the telepath. "Stop...stop...stop..." she chanted to herself to keep focus and to calm herself. The last thing needed was another hole in the mansion's roof to have their room replaced...again.

Scott dozed peacefully next to Jean, the content look on his face of someone who was purely happy. Even in his unconscious state his body recognised the warmth of the familiar presence next to him and the fact they were psychically linked helped as well he was sure. Little did he know that his little piece of paradise was about to be ruined.
It begun slowly, the little movements Jean would make as the dreams begun, the feeling of her lungs moving faster as she begun to panic and finally the feeling of Jean springing up in the bed. Scott's well timed reactions and the fact that every few weeks or months this would happen and he'd have to do the same thing. He sat up in his bed, eyes clamped firmly shut as during this incidents he'd woken up only to have the glasses that were normally on his face floating around the room with the rest of his belongings. After making sure the glasses were in fact there he wrapped his arms round the terrified woman, trying his hardest to whisper calming words in to her ear. He hoped having him close helped but for all he knew he was just white noise to her now. In any case he continued to whisper words like "Shh Shh, It's okay, I'm here, I'm here

Within the screeching, another few words had begun to echo though her mind, albeit faintly. Though this voice was distinctive and one that had always given her a sense of security and stability, even during these erratic nightmares. Her breaths had begun to slow down and the aura around her slowly diminished as she listened to his voice and using it as a beacon to escape the dream. Their belongings dropped back onto the ground and the room ceased it's movements as Jean's eyes closed and She slouched limply in Scott's arms for a few moments. She remained like this for several moments, the only thing confirming that she was alive was her chest rising up and down as she took in slow breaths. Her green eyes finally flickered open again watered up with tears she attempted to hold back.
"I'm sorry." she whispered to him. She was tired of having to put up with this and she believed that he was probably feeling the same way. Psychic link and soulmates or not, there was only so much a person could take. Jean really was afraid how this problem was probably putting strain on their relationship, even if he never complained. "I don't know why I'm acting up again...something bad is coming. I don't know what it is, but I can feel it."

Scott was glad the glasses were still on his face. Tonight Jean hadn't damaged the room, it would've been a bit bad if he had accidentally blasted a hole in the wall instead. He was supposed to be well over that part of his life. Right now though he was more concerned for Jean's well being. It took a lot to go through these episodes and he needed to be strong for her, every relationship came across problems but this one was a little different.
He wiped the tears from her eyes using his thumb, he couldn't have her crying, it wasn't something he liked seeing. He kept his tone nice and soft, he had to try and help her calm down. Hopefully they could both salvage some sleep from this. "Don't be silly...you've got nothing to apologise for. Hopefully we'll have another long gap between episodes..." it wasn't good if Jean thought something bad was coming, she wasn't clairvoyant but if she believed something was up he was inclined to believe her "What? what do you think is coming?"

Honestly, Jean didn't know who she would have been able to cope without Scott's support. She was starting to feel like an animal with rabies, and slowly going mad. Scott was her antidote for that. Had it not been for him, she would have probably gone completely insane. Somehow though, she felt that this was only the beginning of things. These nightmares were like pop quizzes and the real test of their relationship had yet to come.
"I don't know. It's just a feeling." she said looking away out of their bedroom window. "The dreams I get. The recent ones, just feel more intense. I actually feel this burning inside my chest and I just feel like something inside me is trying to ignite." her head fell onto his shoulder as she continued to stare out at the night sky. It was peaceful there, but she knew that elsewhere in the world, it was hell on earth thanks to En Sabah Nur. Innocent lives being destroyed for his quest for power. The more she thought on it, she could feel the fire rising inside her. She took in a deep breath and exhaled to calm herself. No doubt the stress Apocalypse was stirring up had something to do with the dreams getting worse. "Ever since Apocalypse arrived, when I do have the dreams I feel the burning welling up inside more. Like, it's just waiting for something to trigger it and explode. I don't know if my dreams are reflecting on what would happened if it did because every time I do there, just fire everywhere and consuming everything. I'm scared, Scott....I don't know what to do." she hugged him tight for security. Everyone seemingly perished in her nightmares and she couldn't lose anyone, especially Scott.

So the dreams were getting worse? great, it had been a while since her last one and Scott had hoped that they might be going away. What he couldn't work out though was what they meant. After all Jean had never been able to read the future before, or at least he didn't think she'd been able to. The good thing about that was that she might not be actually seeing the future. The bad bit was that this meant the dreams were something else.
When she held him tighter he reciprocated, running his fingers comfortingly through her long red hair. He hated worrying like this, they both had so much to deal with and this was just another thing. He just hoped they could take it "Do yu know what it could be at all? Is it you reading the future or something? or is it a warning from someone else? if so who? and what if its something completly unrelated...I've really got no idea what we're dealing with here"

"I don't know..." she answered his onslaught of questions. She didn't blame him at all. Everything he had asked, she'd been asking herself. Jean was a very gifted mutant, but she didn't recall having precognition in her power set. So she couldn't be seeing the future...on her own at least. It really did feel like there was something else with her. Something that had always been with her since she was a little girl and her powers manifested. That same fire and raptor screeching in her dreams now...she'd seen it before, it was starting to come back to her. Let's not forget the incident 5 years ago at Washington DC. Her fight against Polaris, her power level shot up incredibly high with little to no explanation at all and yet she still had no memory of what had taken place during the time when it did.
"If anything does happen, I want you to stay as far away as possible. I don't want anything to happen to you. Don't worry about me."

Perhaps all the questions were a bad idea. After all she knew only a little more about what this was all about then he did himself and no one at the mansion had discovered a solution. After Washington and the smaller incidents proved that Jean could be extremely dangerous when she had an episode, much more dangerous then she normally was. That had Scott thinking, perhaps...although it was a hard thing to think Jean's condition might some day save the world. Apocolypse was slowing taking over the world and it took a huge amount of power to fight even one of his horsemen. Perhaps Jean's condition had a purpous, to handle threats no one else could take.
He frowned when she talked about if something did go wrong, he on the other hand intended to do the very oposite. Not just because he didn't want to abandon him but as vain as it sounded, if she did end up doing some serious damage he might be one of the few people who could centre her mind and stop it "Well you know I wouldn't be doing that...but have you considered that perhaps you were meant for this, that all of this pain was the start of control? I mean...imagine what the world would be like if you could control these power surges. You could bring peace to the entire planet"

"I'm serious Scott." Jean responded. She knew he would do anything for her well being, but she wouldn't have him endangering himself for her. She couldn't live with herself knowing she had hurt him...or worse. She shook off the thought, there was no need to get upset.
She grew silent for a few moments. Was she meant for this? It was kind of laughable. She wasn't some god or a messiah. Not to her knowledge anyway. What, did she have to die like Christ in order to become attuned with these power surges and vanquish Apocalypse?
"There will never be peace, Scott. Neither I or anyone can ever bring it." she sighed. She believed in Professor Xavier's dream for peace, but she knew that that was all it was, a dream. There would be indifference because some people just can't accept change or anything that was different from themselves.

Scott frowned, he didn' like it when she talked like this. She knew he wouldn't leave her side...why couldn't she just accept it instead of trying to convince him to abandon her? he hoped the conversation would turn from this slightly morbid line of talk...and luckily it did, unfortunatly for him though it went to a place just as morbid.
He wasn't sure if she was giving up or not...he knew they'd both fought hard over the years to try to attempt peace to the humans and mutants, to prove there was nothing to fear from them "There could be...they need us now, people like us are the only way we can win this war and when we do...and we will, maybe we'll get the thanks we deserve"

"You're right...and you're wrong, love." Jean sighed shifting a bit in his arms. "True, the world needs us because there's no way humanity could defend themselves against a threat like Apocalypse. They can barely defend themselves against Magneto and his brotherhood. But even when we win, the world might be more accepting of us, but there will always be some who hate us because we're different and they don't understand. After all, Apocalypse is a mutant. That alone leaves a bad taste in humanity's mouth. I'm not trying to be pessimistic...I want us to be able to live free of persecution, but I'm also trying to think realistic about the way the world is."

Even though she was right Scott couldn't help but be optomistic. After all the idea that Jean could weild these simply epic powers was a possibility that he couldn't help but explore. In his mind he pictured what Apocolypse could do against the heavy hitters of the world if Jean had those powers. The thought also occured if everyone who had areason to dispise apocolypse worked together...if Jean with her powers teamed with the Professor, That Primarch guy and even Magneto...how could they be anything but victorious? "I suppose...I just can't think of any way out of this, It isn't like anything else we tried has had any success

"I know what you mean. Bringing about world peace maybe be an impossible task, but bringing Apocalypse isn't. We'll find a way to defeat him eventually. Our survival kind of depends on it..." she said looking down at her own hands. Some side of her believed that Scott could probably be right. Jean was already a powerful mutant and had been holding back the last few years because she's been afraid of her growing abilities. Perhaps she should try to embrace her power growth and maybe it would give them some extra fire power...no pun intended.
"No worries, love. We will find a way. We just have to take things a day at a time. Lets try to salvage a good night's sleep..." she said hoping she wouldn't have another episode. She laid back down onto her side of the bed and pulled the sheet back over her form. "I love you." Jean reached over to give him a soft kiss on the lips and returned her head to her pillow while she snuggled back close to him.
