Dreams Never Die (DND) takes place right after the Dream's End crossover. The X-Men are thrown in disarray because of the recent amount of deaths, Colossus' being the latest. The non-X-Men teams have disbanded and everyone has come back to the mansion to figure out what to do next. Some will decide to join polite society and attempt life without the “X” attached to their uniform. Others will come to seek peace and to deal with the recent deaths. Still others will want to fight.
How you bring your character in is completely up to you but all the characters will be comic canon through the Dream's End crossover. This took place in 2001 so when you are researching the character's past, keep that in mind.
With the death of her husband, Jean Grey-Summers has decided to take a back seat in the X-Men's world and concentrate on re-opening the school. Changing the name to The Institute for Higher Learning, she has sought out and welcomed new students. Some of her fellow X-Men have agreed to help as faculty but not everyone is cut out for teaching in the classroom. Others have given their time to training the students. Still others prefer to remain an X-Man and stay away from the school aspect of life.
We open three months after the memorial services for Colossus. The school has been reopened for that entire time as Jean wasted no time in trying to put life back into order for her friends and family. Some of her friends have wandered away yet many others have stayed. Xavier took a leave of absence just days following Colossus' memorial and hasn't been heard from since. They are respecting his privacy, knowing that he needs time to heal from the wounds that have been opened.
Things have been quiet for the most part in the past six months. Nothing has been heard of from the X-Men's enemies, the government has left them alone and the school is running smoothly. However, as we all know, that will never last.
